Wesley Chapel girls take region crown

NEW SMYRNA BEACH - The Wesley Chapel girls 4x400 relay team took second place in the final event, giving the Wildcats a team win in the Class 3A, Region 2 tournament.

Wesley Chapel finished with 64 points. Leesburg was second with 60. Ocala Vanguard won the boys with 63 points. Ocala Forest was second with 58.

River Ridge's Lauryn Douglas won the girls pole vault with a 10-foot vault.

"I won by fewer chances," Douglas said. "I wasn't expecting it. I thought I was going to get second or third. I'm not used to the competition."

"She was confident and all smiles," River Ridge coach Dave Heywood said.

Wesley Chapel's Aaron Dickler won the 100 meters in 11.01 seconds. The Wesley Chapel boys 4x100-meter relay team of Rashad Cole, Jason Wells, Nigel Bryant and Dickler won in 43.02.

Wesley Chapel senior Stephanie Amerman took second (5:33.4) in the 1,600 meters and third in the 3,200 (12:16.54). River Ridge's Justin Coyle was second in the 800 meters (1:58.53).

The Wesley Chapel girls 4x100 team of Jasmine Pleasant, Jerica Cabrera, Melissa Sams and Jasmine Cabrera was second in 49.17.

There was no dropped baton this year as the Lecanto boys 4x800 relay team ran a record time to finish second and qualify for state. Joseph Carrigan, Dustin Elder, Joseph Burnett and Wayne Saxer finished in 8:13.86. Last year's relay team was disqualified because of a dropped baton after a collision.

"It was our best run ever," said Norton, who ran th race last year. "We beat last year's time by four seconds. We beat this year's time by 17 seconds."

The Lecanto girls 4x800 finished third and also is headed to the Class 3A meet next week at Coral Springs High. Amy Rundio, Jillian Swartz, Kelly King and Tara Haddock finished in 10:12.74. The 4x800 relay team also went to state last year.

Land O'Lakes' Steven Bell (9:39.6) took third in the 3,200 meters beating out Mitchell's Jeff Masterson (9:49.58). Masterson is the defending state champion in the 3,200. Lecanto's Rundio was third in the 800 meters (2:27.15).

Lecanto's Lisa Bonadonna finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (48.75). The senior was seventh in the triple jump despite a personal best of 33-9.

Central's Jeffrey McNair took second in the discus and Springstead's Christopher Sibilia-Wait fourth. McNair had a 156-11 and Sibilia-Wait had a 150-1.

Lane O'Lakes High's Steven Bell was third in the 1,600 in 4:20.09.
