Universities have ideas, want backers

Florida universities are doing a better job of moving faculty research from lab to patent to commercialization. And they're looking for private equity and expertise to continue the trend.
According to a survey to be presented at the second annual Florida Tech Transfer Conference, May 18-19 in Orlando, the state's universities reported receiving 127 patents in 2004, up from 119 in 2003. In addition, 99 licenses were signed in 2004 for commercialization of university research, compared with 91 in 2003. That brought to 270 the number of licenses generating revenue for Florida's universities.
The Tech Transfer conference, to be held at the Hilton Walt Disney World, gives private companies exposure to new technologies developed by university faculty. Eleven promising university spinoff companies will present ideas in an effort to find business partners and capital. There also will be demonstrations of products and prototypes developed by university researchers.
The Tech Transfer conference is a joint effort of the Tampa Bay Technology Forum, the Florida Research Consortium and the Central Florida Technology Partnership.
