'Greek bomb' shatters Sponge Docks windows

By Times Staff
Published May 3, 2005

TARPON SPRINGS - In an unwelcome celebration of the Greek Orthodox Easter, a "Greek bomb" shattered four windows at two Sponge Docks restaurants early Sunday morning, according to police. Around 5 a.m., an owner of Dodecanese Restaurant and Bakery on Athens Street heard an explosion and shattering glass, police said. Nicholas Christoforos told police that one of his front windows blew out and he saw others destroyed across the street at Santorini's bakery. Police found the makings of a "Greek bomb" - the local term for a homemade explosive created with a cardboard paper towel roll and tape - littering the street in the rain. Damage was estimated at $800, and no arrests were made. Traditionally in Tarpon Springs, after the midnight announcement that Christ has risen, people go into the streets and celebrate the start of Orthodox Easter. A few set off the homemade explosives, a tradition that was carried over from some Greek islands, but that has tapered off in recent years.
