Treasure Island celebrates 50 years with party, games

TREASURE ISLAND - A seven-hour street party Saturday around Treasure Island's clock tower on 107th Avenue will kick off a month of events celebrating the city's 50th anniversary.
The free event includes entertainment provided by Capt. Bob Thompson until 7 p.m., and by the Back Breakers and Florida's '50s Original Rockers from 7 to 11 p.m.
The street party will feature contests and prizes, as well as food and beverage concessions operated by local civic associations and the Treasure Island Business Association. Fiftieth anniversary displays will be presented by the Treasure Islettes and the Boca Ciega Power Squadron. From 5 to 9 p.m., the Treasure Island Open Air Market will be open with arts and crafts and fresh produce, and a children's area featuring face painters, magicians, caricature artists and games provided by local elementary schools.
Other activities include a motorcycle show provided by the Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club, Station 15, and an antique car show and antique firetrucks provided by the Dalmingo Society.

May 13. Movies in the Park, 7 p.m. to midnight, Treasure Island Community Center Park, Gulf Boulevard and 106th Avenue. Free.
May 21. Armed Forces Day Offshore Fishing Rodeo, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; captain's meeting, May 20, 7 to 9 p.m., Treasure Island Community Center, Gulf Boulevard and 106th Avenue.
May 21. Potluckapalooza (potluck dinner and jam session - blues/folk), 6:30 to 11:30 p.m., Treasure Island Community Center and Park, Gulf Boulevard and 106th Avenue. Free.
May 22. Tour of Homes; new and historic Treasure Island homes, 1 to 5 p.m.; Call 360-2366 for tickets.
May 27 and May 28. Sun, Sand and Symphony Concert on the Beach, 5 to 11 p.m., County Beach, Gulf Boulevard and 104th Avenue; featuring the Florida Orchestra both nights, with performances by Jon Secada and Joey Daniels on May 28. Free.

Gulfport
The Gulfport Senior Center will host a Walk-a-Thon for seniors on May 12 as part of the Older American Month Celebration. This year's theme is "Senior Centers on the Move." Everyone is encouraged to participate. For information, call Sue Frank at 893-2237.

The Gulfport Community Players will present Grotesque Lovesongs at the Hickman Theater beginning May 12. The production will run through May 22 with Thursday through Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $10 at Eileen's Resale Boutique, the Gulfport Casino, the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce and the Beach Bazaar, and by calling the Gulfport Players' ticket/information line at 322-0316. Indian Rocks Beach
Because of poor weather, the "Biggest Beach Party Ever," sponsored by the North Beaches Branch YMCA, has been rescheduled for 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday. The free event is open to the public, who may bring beach chairs but are asked not to bring coolers or backpacks. Soda, beer, wine, grilled hot dogs and hot sandwiches will be for sale. The event will take place on the beach between 17th and 18th avenues. A bonfire will be lit, using a cord of pine, just after sunset to illuminate the beach for dancing. Attendees should wear comfortable beach attire for dancing in the sand to music provided by a disc jockey. For information, call 595-5610.
Indian Shores
All residents are invited to a groundbreaking ceremony for the Gulf Boulevard Improvement/Utility Undergrounding Project, 10 a.m., Monday at Town Hall, 19305 Gulf Blvd. The event is sponsored by Progress Energy and the Town of Indian Shores. Madeira Beach

Registration for the Madeira Beach Summer Camp Program is now open through May 16 at the city's Recreation Center. The nine-week summer program will begin May 24 and is open to elementary school age children who have completed kindergarten through the fifth grade. The cost is $55 a week for city residents and $65 a week for nonresidents. Program hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Activities include game, crafts, field trips, swimming, hockey, basketball, football, baseball and other sporting events. North Redington Beach
The town's comprehensive plan work group and county planning staff will meet today at 9 a.m. in Town Hall to continue work on the plan update. The proposed plan increases the number of tourist units allowed in the beach tourist zone from 25 to 50 per acre, reduces the number of residential units in the same zone to 15 per acre, and affects open space and recreation, housing and capital improvements. Treasure Island
The Art Guild of Treasure Island will hold a painting exchange Thursday at Treasure Island City Hall, 120 108th Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each artist may submit two paintings or photographs for exhibit with a $1 entry fee for each. Entries will be exhibited and ribbon awards presented at the "Summer Wind" show and membership meeting at noon May 14. A potluck luncheon will mark this last exhibit of the 2005 season. The Treasure Island Open Air Market is held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m 107th Ave N., just east of Gulf Boulevard at Pirates Square. The market is sponsored by the Treasure Island Business Association and features live entertainment, fresh produce, baked goods, prepared foods, collectibles, and arts and crafts of all types and styles.
