Noles' homers help pound No. 4 Gators

GAINESVILLE - Led by home runs from Brant Peacher and Wesley Chapel native Danny Wardell, Florida State defeated No. 4 Florida 9-4 in front of 5,483 - the fourth-largest crowd at McKethan Stadium.
It was the second consecutive loss for Gators (31-13), who have lost three of their last four, including two last weekend against Tennessee. The victory could have important NCAA seeding implications for the No. 15 Seminoles (38-14).
With a 3-0 count, Peacher hit a two-run homer to give FSU a 4-2, third-inning lead. FSU led 5-3, when Wardell hit a 360-yard home run, his seventh of the season and fourth in the past six games.
The Seminoles ended with a three-run ninth inning.
Big East, ACC settle
The Big East and Atlantic Coast conferences have settled their legal differences over school defections with an agreement worth about $5-million, according to the Hartford Courant. Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and West Virginia signed off on the agreement, which drops lawsuits between the conferences, their member schools and officers.
FOOTBALL: Marshall coach Mark Snyder has hired Clemson assistant Thielen Smith to oversee the defensive line. ... A federal judge dismissed portions of a lawsuit filed by former Kentucky assistant football coach Claude Bassett against the university's Athletic Association, the NCAA and the Southeastern Conference.
BASKETBALL: Charlotte center Martin Iti is leaving after two seasons. Iti started 27 of 29 games last season and averaged 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds.... Ray Harper was hired as Oklahoma City's basketball coach, a day after he resigned as coach at Kentucky Wesleyan.
SOFTBALL: FSU (32-22) dropped its third and fourth straight games against the No. 23rd-ranked Gators (38-19) by 7-5 and 2-0.
TRACK: FSU distance runner Laura Bowerman was named the ACC's track and field female rookie of the year. Noles' Bob Braman was named ACC coach of the year.
