Hot ticket: Sculptor's solid accomplishments

By Times Staff
Published May 5, 2005

Eric Higgs has carved out a place for himself locally since moving to St. Petersburg from California about two years ago. The sculptor is known for his spare, finely honed work in stone, but he also works in other materials. His jaunty aluminum fabrication rises on the north facade of the Arts Center on Central Avenue, for example. Higgs converted an old warehouse at 2245 Fourth Ave. S into a studio equipped with the tools of his craft - a forklift, welders, power drills and grinders, along with a mother lode of hand tools for refining his sculptures.

A studio visit is a rare and rewarding opportunity to see where and how art is created. Higgs opens his up at 7:30 p.m. Friday for "When Stone Meets Plastic," a show of his current work, and photographer Alex McKnight's The Story of the Stone. (727) 641-5161.
