Top 5 movies

By Times Staff
Published May 5, 2005

1. Kingdom of Heaven - Ridley Scott's 12th century crusades epic has political relevance today, with sword-slinging action rivaling Gladiator.

2. Crash - Racial tensions in Los Angeles simmer among an ensemble cast, a la Magnolia and Short Cuts. Director/co-writer Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby) fills his movie with messages.

3. Fear and Trembling - Japanese corporate politics test the mettle of a plucky French woman (Sylvie Testud). A witty blend of Lost in Translation and Secretary.

4. Millions - A stolen fortune literally drops into the laps of two British lads, who try hard to spend the loot. Directed with uncommon gentility, but expected visual flair, by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later).

5. Frank Miller's Sin City - Co-directors Miller and Robert Rodriguez (with help from Quentin Tarantino) create a visually arresting, occasionally nauseating, adaptation of a crime-ridden graphic novel.
