  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Barcelona City Homes

By MICHAEL CANNING
Published May 6, 2005

LOCATION: 3012 W Barcelona St., on the southeast corner of MacDill Avenue

DEVELOPER: Domain Development

DESCRIPTION: Two three-story buildings with 11 loft townhomes. Units range from 1,600 to 2,000 square feet, with two bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms, three bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms, or four bedroom and 3 1/2 bathrooms. Architectural style is contemporary.

PRICE: Prices start at $350,000. The high end of the price range hasn't been set, but it won't exceed $600,000, said Keith Stanton, Domain Development's architect and president.

AMENITIES: Private outdoor gardens or yards for each unit; granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances in kitchens; hardwood floors; above counter sinks in bathrooms; two-car garages; and office space in most units.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Working from home is a "lot of the reason why people live in infill projects like this," Stanton said. Residents at his other South Tampa loft developments - SoHo Lofts, Parkland Lofts and Empedrado Lofts - often tell him they want work space in their homes. So he designed most of the units in Barcelona City Homes with office spaces.

TIMELINE: Demolition of two houses on two of the project's four lots began a month ago. Construction should start in a month or two and finish in early 2006, Stanton said.

MOVE-IN DATE: Early 2006
