Organic farm marks annual fundraiser

By JACKIE RIPLEY
Published May 6, 2005

TOWN 'N COUNTRY - Sweetwater Organic Community Farm is celebrating its 13th annual Pesto Festo on Saturday night. "Listen to music, walk the farm and have a good time," said Ann Kramer, board president. "We're expecting about 150 to 200 people.

Pesto Festo is the community farm's biggest fundraiser. Proceeds help cover the farm's operation costs.

The event, which is open to the public, starts at 6 p.m. An all-you-can-eat meal includes fresh pesto over a pasta salad made with Sweetwater's organically grown greens. Dinner is rounded out by fresh bread from Great Harvest Bread, and dessert donated by Bern's Steak House.

The light and airy Afro-Euro and Americana sound of St. Petersburg's Urban Gypsies provides after-dinner entertainment. There also will be a silent auction; those attending can even bring a drum for a late-night drumming session. Children are welcome.

Sweetwater, at 6942 W Comanche Ave., is a nonprofit organization of more than 100 members. It operates on 6 acres of suburban property along Sweetwater Creek.

The farm gives members a chance to grow their own organic vegetables or simply enjoy fresh produce free of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
