Man dies in fall from apartment balcony

TAMPA - Shaun Kyle McCarthy was visiting friends at the Avalon Heights apartments on Fletcher Avenue across from the University of South Florida around 2 a.m. Friday. After friends took his keys, Hillsborough Sheriff's Office investigators say, McCarthy stepped over the railway of a bedroom balcony and fell five stories to the ground.
McCarthy, who was three weeks shy of his 23rd birthday, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say McCarthy was not a student at USF.
Records indicate McCarthy was arrested for driving under the influence in January 2004.
