Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Boat ramp repairs won't hinder access

By Times Staff Writer
Published May 7, 2005

Repairs to boat ramps and docks at John Chesnut Sr. Park in East Lake will begin late this month.

Workers will close one ramp at a time so boaters have access to Lake Tarpon during the work. The first floating dock at Chesnut is scheduled for demolition May 26.

Work on the second dock will begin after the first is done. After finishing at Chesnut, crews are scheduled to move to A.L. Anderson Park in Tarpon Springs and demolish the first dock there July 28. Once that dock is restored, the second dock will be replaced, with completion expected by Sept. 8.

Finally, crews will close the boat ramp at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor for repairs from Sept. 9 through Oct. 4. Since Philippe Park has only one boat ramp, there will be no boat access to Tampa Bay during repairs there. The $348,000 project includes replacing floating docks, gangways and stationary concrete abutments. Officials originally planned to close both ramps at the same time at Chesnut and Anderson, but changed the plan after boaters complained. For more information, call (727) 464-3347.
