Nelson proposes U.S. help in tracking sex offenders

MIAMI - States such as Florida that enact laws to improve tracking of sex offenders would be eligible for federal money under legislation unveiled Friday by Florida U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.
Nelson, a Democrat, said the bill would authorize up to $30-million in Justice Department grants for states that use satellites to track offenders convicted of preying on children if they get out of prison.
Responding to the killings of two Florida girls allegedly by convicted sex offenders, Gov. Jeb Bush last week signed into law a measure toughening penalties on child molesters and requiring many of them to wear satellite tracking devices for the rest of their lives if released.
