Calling all WWII vets
By TIMES STAFF
Published May 7, 2005
We need your help. Later this summer we plan to commemorate the end of WWII with stories, photographs and graphics. We could use your memories and keepsakes.
We want you ... to be part of our plans. Sixty years ago this summer, World War II finally drew to a close. Millions paid the ultimate price, lives were changed and nearly every facet of existence was touched. As we put together our plans to commemorate this historic anniversary, we're seeking readers with specific ties to that era to be a part of our coverage. Below is a list of topics we need your help with:
WAR-TIME ROMANCES:
Did you meet for the first time at a USO dance and were married a few days later? Are you a war-bride from Europe or the Pacific? Guys, what about the "one that got away"? We want to hear about war-time romances, marriages and unrequited love.
SACRIFICES:
This could be as monumental as losing a loved one on the field of battle or as mundane as making do with ration coupons. Millions of sacrifices were made. We want to hear about your experiences. Do you have a compelling story about sacrifice? Are you here because of the sacrifice of another? What about sacrifices made here on the homefront?
RACIAL ISSUES/HATE: We most definitely want to include the contributions made by African Americans and would like to hear from black veterans and from African Americans who were helping here at home. Are you German or Japanese? How were you treated during or after the war?Are you a survivor of a Nazi death camp?
LIFE AND TIMES: Is there a song that brings up particular memories? What movie sticks out in your mind? Is there a radio broadcast that has special significance to you? Tell us about that. Do you have a particularly touching letter that you've kept all these years? Who was the "pin-up girl" in your footlocker?
If you can help with any of these areas, or if you have a truly unusual story to tell, please contact us. Please don't send original photos or memorabilia. Send us a copy and we'll contact you if we can use the original.
