5 charged in Buenos Aires nightclub fire

Published May 8, 2005

BUENOS AIRES - Five former municipal officials have been charged with manslaughter in connection with the December 2004 nightclub fire that claimed 193 lives.

Judge Marcelo Lucini handed down the charges Friday against a city official, Fabiana Fiszbin, and four others who had oversight of the city's nightclubs at the time of the Dec. 30 fire at the Cromagnon Republic club in downtown Buenos Aires. Authorities earlier filed manslaughter charges against owner Omar Chaban, who has been in police custody since the fire.

Laureate resigns from party in Northern Ireland

BELFAST, Northern Ireland - Nobel Peace Prize laureate David Trimble, a key backer of Northern Ireland's 1998 peace accord, said Saturday he will resign as Ulster Unionist Party leader after losing a decadelong battle to steer fellow Protestants toward compromise with Roman Catholics.

Trimble's decision to quit followed the Ulster Unionists' worst-ever performance in British parliamentary elections Thursday. The party that once dominated politics in this predominantly Protestant territory retained just one of Northern Ireland's 18 seats, and the highest-profile loser was Trimble himself.

The Ulster Unionists declined to say when Trimble's resignation would take effect or when it would name a successor.

Jailed leader joins race for Egyptian presidency

CAIRO - A jailed leader of the banned Muslim Brotherhood will challenge Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in the September election, his lawyer said Saturday, but the powerful Islamist group said it had not endorsed the challenger.

Essam el-Erian and three other leaders of the banned Islamist group were arrested and rounded up with 200 others Friday during nationwide protests for political reform.

Deputy Brotherhood leader Mohammed Seyed Habib confirmed that el-Erian had announced his intentions, but he denied the group had nominated a presidential candidate.
