HEATWAVE HITS YBOR
Tampa Bay's biggest annual dance party heats up Ybor City on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning. This year's version of Tropical Heatwave, sponsored by WMNF-FM 88.5, features 32 bands on six stages and all the eclectic fare music lovers have come to expect. Top names include the Laura Love Band, Alejandro Escovedo, the Legendary Shack Shakers, the Hacienda Brothers, Mofro and Brave Combo. It starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Cuban Club, 2010 Avenida Republica de Cuba, and adjacent areas. $30 advance, $35 at the door, $15 after 11 p.m., $10 ages 12 to 20. (813) 238-8001.
PLAYING WITH PAINT
Two hundred of the world's best professional paintball teams that's right, professional paintball teams compete on the grounds of Raymond James Stadium today through Sunday in the 2005 Super 7 World Series of Paintball. Divisional competition among the seven-member teams, who try to capture the other team's flag on a tennis-court-sized area while shooting each other with paint, takes place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Saturday. The finals are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, with the winning team also capturing $25,000. Admission and parking are free for spectators. The stadium is at 4201 N Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. PIERFEST FOR FAMILIES
For more extreme sports action, check out PierFest, St. Petersburg's annual festival for kids and teens, with skateboard, inline, BMX and wakeboard competitions, plus the Motocross Big Air Show with Tommy Clowers and other pro trick riders. There are tamer family games, too. Music includes a concert by Crossfade (7 p.m. Saturday, $20) and a Battle of Teen Bands (Sunday).
