The recruitment of quarterback Brent Schaeffer has begun again.
Schaeffer returned home to Deerfield Beach on Thursday after finishing the spring semester at Tennessee.
Schaeffer plans to transfer, and his mother, Chandra, said he has sent release forms to eight schools, including USF, Central Florida and Miami.
Schaeffer, who will have three seasons of eligibility left after sitting out this fall, considered USF out of high school, and his high school coach, Joe Redmond, has said the Bulls still have interest.
Schaeffer also has sent release papers to Clemson, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Miami (Ohio).
One of the nation's top recruits, Schaeffer was suspended by Tennessee last month after an arrest for misdemeanor assault.
SOUTHERN CAL: Defensive tackle Manuel Wright will enter the NFL supplemental draft for academic reasons. As a sophomore last season, he had 23 tackles and recovered two fumbles in 11 games. Wright is eligible because he has been out of high school for three years. He signed in 2002 but did not qualify academically.
Basketball
VILLANOVA: Forward Jason Fraser had surgery on both knees, the seventh time he has been operated on. Tiny holes were punched in the bone to stimulate cartilage growth and reduce pain and swelling. He will rest for at least four months, then be re-evaluated.
Baseball
SAINT LEO 13-0, NOVA SE 5-6: The host Lions had 20 hits in the opener but lost the nightcap on Derek Antelo's 13 strikeouts. Up 7-1 in the opener, Saint Leo scored six in the ninth. Then Antelo allowed three hits, none through five, to improve to 11-0.
Track
USF: Keswick Christian graduate Christa Benton finished second in the 10,000 meters to help the Bulls end Day 1 of the Conference USA meet in Houston in third. The meet concludes Saturday.
Benton finished in 36:39.5, 24.35 seconds behind DePaul's Marlene Key. Southern Miss led with 20 points, two ahead of Cincinnati and three ahead of USF.
The men, led by Brandon Carey's fifth in the hammer, were ninth with six points. East Carolina led with 18, one more than Marquette.
Volleyball
USF: Falin Daniel, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter who earned second-team all-state honors as a senior at Punta Gorda Charlotte, said she will sign. Daniel, who chose the Bulls over Auburn and Florida International, said she also has spoken with women's basketball coach Jose Fernandez and plans to walk on.
Information from other news organizations was used in the report.
