Police: Ex-officer kept cash raised for slain officer's kin

PANAMA CITY BEACH - A former police officer has been accused of keeping money that donors gave him after he told them it was for the family of a slain colleague.
Police arrested Louie Randall Durden, 22, of Panama City on Wednesday and charged him with grand theft. They said he kept about $500 from the sale of bumper stickers that said "In Memory of Sgt. Kevin Kight" after telling buyers the money would help Kight's family.
Kight, 34, was shot to death during a traffic stop on Easter, allegedly by Robert J. Bailey, 22, of Milwaukee.
"Trying to take advantage of a sad situation for personal gain after the community has been so supportive of the Kight family is pathetic," Maj. David Humphreys of the Panama City Beach Police Department told the News Herald of Panama City.
Durden was a patrol officer with the Panama City Beach Police Department for about six months until he was fired in September 2004 for what Humphreys said were "honesty issues."
According to Durden's termination letter, he lied about how he damaged a police car.
