ZHANG CHUNQIAO, 88, one of the Gang of Four that terrorized China during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, died April 21, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. In 2001, the former deputy prime minister was released from prison. The Gang of Four persecuted thousands of people and pushed the country to the brink of famine.

HERB SARGENT, 81, a former writer and producer for Saturday Night Live, died May 6 in New York. He worked for 20 years at the NBC comedy, where he was a creator of "Weekend Update."

HELEN JACKSON WILKINS CLAYTOR, 98, a pivotal figure in the racial desegregation of the Young Women's Christian Association and its first African-American president, died Tuesday in Grand Rapids, Mich. The longtime civil rights leader in Grand Rapids served two terms, from 1967 to 1976, as national president of the YWCA.

JAY MARSHALL, 85, dean of the Society of American Magicians, died Tuesday in Chicago. He appeared 14 times on the Ed Sullivan television show, his family said.

LOUIS LEITHOLD, 80, who wrote one of the most widely used calculus textbooks and helped change the way the subject is taught, was found dead April 29 at his Los Angeles home. The coroner's office said he died of natural causes.
