  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Rhyme time

www.oedilf.com/

When was the last time you read or heard a limerick that was focused on the Aharonov-Bohm effect? Thought so. This site is making its merry way through the Oxford English Dictionary in limerick form and should tickle your funny bone. At the time of writing, it had rhymed its way from Aa to Ba, with more to come. Read or contribute; the choice is yours.

Getting it all together

www.BackPackIt.com/

Getting yourself organized can be an uphill task. But extending the thought to a small group might send shivers through your spine. If so, take a peek at this great Web-based tool. The free parts allow you to collect and share to-do and note items. If you upgrade to the paid version, you can add file attachments. Oodles of other nifty features are to be had, such as RSS feeds, and every page has an inbound e-mail address. It's worth every penny.

Lighting the way

students.washington.edu/natetrue/wlcolor/wlcolor.html

You might have seen one of those nifty glowing globes at a mall. They chatter back and forth with your computer and, depending on the subject matter, glow appropriately in response. Say the market is down: It'll glow red if your position is a bear and green if you're bullish. But if you've been wiped out by a lousy investment and can't afford said globe, fire up this page, grab a soldering iron and make your own for less than $50.

Know the code

www.LearnMorseCode.com/

As a kid who got into a lot of trouble, I knew memorizing the Morse Code for SOS would come in handy someday. It never happened. If you've ever had a hankering for learning it yourself, you'll love this easy-to-understand guide. There's a visual map that makes deciphering quick and easy. Genius.

Ad infinitum

flashblock.mozdev.org/installation.html

The arms war to get advertising in front of your eyes escalates. And Flash is the latest weapon in the arsenal. Rather than javascript popups bugging the heck out of you, advertisers are increasingly using all-singing, all-dancing Flash-based ads. Fight back with Flash Block. If you're a Mozilla or FireFox fan, it's a short, free download away. Be sure to click around the site to make sure it's for you, and at least read the FAQ before installing.
