State makes sex offender search easier

Florida residents will be able to find out where sex offenders live within five miles of their home, complete with a map showing the precise locations.

TALLAHASSEE - Heightened interest in the state's database of sex offenders has prompted changes to make it easier for the public to use.

The changes mean you can find out where sex offenders live within five miles of your home or a school or other location, complete with a map showing the precise locations.

Interest in the database spiked in March after 6-year-old Jessica Lunsford was kidnapped from her Citrus County home and murdered. A convicted sex offender who lived nearby has been charged with her murder.

"This will go a long way toward empowering parents to protect their children," said Attorney General Charlie Crist, who unveiled the changes Tuesday.

The new "Neighborhood Search" section can be found at fdle.state.fl.us.
