By JON WILSON
Published May 18, 2005

ST. PETERSBURG - The acclaimed Alumni Singers, who specialize in resounding spirituals, will present their annual spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Community Baptist Church, 2901 54th Ave. S.

The concert is one of the highlights of the group's yearlong 25th anniversary celebration. The public is invited. There is no charge to attend, but a free-will offering will be collected.

Robert Anders will direct the choir, and Dorothy Jenkins is the accompanist.

The Alumni Singers organized in 1980 during Gibbs High School's golden anniversary observance. The group had its roots in another renowned choir, the high school's St. Cecilia Chorus, which educator Ernest Ponder directed.

During their anniversary series, the Alumni Singers haved intended to generate renewed interest in spirituals, a musical genre that reflects African-American history. The group also performs gospel, standard hymns, anthems and secular music.

Included among its spiritual repertoire are such songs as Elijah Rock, O Mary, Don't You Weep, and The Battle of Jericho.

The Alumni Singers have performed throughout Florida. One of their most memorable appearances was a 1986 Florida Orchestra Super-Pops event, which included the Porgy and Bess Suite under the direction of Skitch Henderson. The singers also have appeared regularly at Bethune-Cookman College's Choral Music Festival.

Members are chosen through audition. There is no age limit.
