The University of South Florida will announce on Friday that it has received the largest donation in its history, a gift worth $34.5-million.
The gift from Dr. Kiran Patel and his wife, Dr. Pallavi Patel, will build the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions on USF's campus. The Patel Center on Fowler Avenue across the street from the Museum of Science & Industry will include four pavilions to house scholars and researchers, a conference center to host foreign leaders, a 500- to 600-seat auditorium, classrooms, research offices and a center for visiting dignitaries.
The Center's focus will be on studying and solving global problems in economics, health, security, sustainable environments and culture.
Dr. Patel, 57, a Tampa philanthropist who sits on USF's board of trustees, and his wife will give a total of $18.5-milion, some of which will be part of a "challenge gift" to match other donations to the center.
The Patels' gift will make USF eligible to receive state matching funds of $16-million, university officials said. The Patels' gift and state matching funds combined make the gift worth $34.5-million.
