BALLET GALA, the premiere performance of Burnham Youth Ballet, will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Curtis Peterson Auditorium at Lecanto High. The performance will feature excerpts from Sleeping Beauty. All members of the Burnham Youth Ballet are from Citrus County, and the director is Philip Burnham. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $8 for children.
WEST CITRUS ELKS OF HOMOSASSA will hold a Jam Session at the lodge from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday. This will be the final jam of the season. The music will include jazz, blues, golden oldies, big band, and country. The kitchen will be open for sandwich-type food. A donation of $3 is requested for the Elks Charity Fund. Staffers request that guests sign the register. The Elks Lodge is on Grover Cleveland Boulevard about a half-mile east of U.S. 19.
FISH AND PICKIN': The Istachatta General Store, 28198 Magnon Drive, Istachatta, will have an all-you-can-eat fish fry and concert beginning at 4 p.m. today. The dinner menu includes fish, baked beans, grits, hush puppies and a drink for $6.89 plus tax per person. Bluegrass and gospel music will be provided by the Istachatta Back Porch Pickers. ROCK ON: John Oliva's Pain, featuring the lead singer of the Florida-based hard rock band Savatage, will host a CD release party and tour kickoff at 9:30 tonight at the Bourbon Street Concert Club, 4331 U.S. 19, New Port Richey. LOOK AHEAD
NATURE COAST DECORATIVE ARTISTS will meet at 9 a.m. June 4 in the Weeki Wachee Senior Citizens Club. The Senior club is at 3357 Susan Drive, Spring Hill. During the June meeting members will do a corn-on-the-cob design on a rolling pin. The class will be taught by Pat Otto. DESOTO'S "RIVER OF DISCORD' celebration is scheduled for June 18 and is sponsored by the Dunnellon Area Chamber of Commerce as that area's contribution to the Nature Coast Driving Tour. The celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. across from the Wal-Mart on U.S. 41 (designated De Soto Trail) and is free. This will be an educational, interactive use of displays and lectures. It will commemorate De Soto's mention of the Dunnellon area in his diary, and the historical events that occurred at that time, as well as highlighting Florida's culture and history.
FESTIVAL OF ARTS: The Hernando County Fine Arts Council will have its 21st annual Art, Craft and Music Festival from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 28 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 29 at Tom Varn Park in Brooksville. The event will include a juried fine art and craft show with more than $6,500 in awards, plus entertainment throughout the day by local and regional performers. Admission for the public is free. WEST CITRUS ELKS will hold their annual Pig Roast Picnic and Dance May 28 to celebrate the beginning of Memorial Day weekend. This year the event will be in the ballroom with a served buffet of picnic fare from 3:30 to 5. The feast will include barbecue pork, boiled shrimp, steamed clams, corn on the cob, baked beans, coleslaw, hush puppies, and apple cobbler and ice cream. From 5:30 to 9:30 the Diana and Mitch Duo will entertain with live music, vocals and comedy. The dance floor will be open. Admission is $15. Tickets at the bar. No tickets will be sold after Sunday. All proceeds will go to Elks Charities.
SHAKE IT UP: For the Kids, a benefit to support the Citrus County chapter of the All Children's Sertoma Therapy Center, will be at 6 p.m. June 4 at Chateau Chan Sezz restaurant, 207 N Apopka Ave., Inverness. The lawn concert features Bill Lindsey, an Elvis impersonator, and music by the Shakers, playing early rock 'n' roll. Singer Haley Albaum, 11, is also scheduled to perform. Tickets are $10. CRYSTAL RIVER ROTARY is sponsoring a Duck Race on July Fourth at Hunter's Spring Park in Crystal River. This new fundraiser will be a fun event for the whole family. The club has set the goal of racing 1,500 plastic ducks at 3 p.m. Ducks are available for adoption at $5 each or 5 ducks for $20. Duck adoption papers are ready at the following locations: Capital City Banks, Fancy's Pets, Key Training Center Thrift Stores, Military Outlet, Nature Coast Bank, and SunTrust Banks.
