UT stays alive

LAKELAND - Tampa won two games Friday to stay alive in the NCAA II South Region at Henley Field.
The Spartans eliminated Rollins with a 2-1 win, then ousted Tusculum 7-6 in the nightcap.
In the late baseball game, the Spartans won on an infield bouncer by J.R. Kopf in the bottom of the ninth inning that scored centerfielder Roberto Valiente.
"These guys haven't quit," Tampa coach Joe Urso said. "They have a lot of fight left in them. I am just proud of my guys for battling out of the losers' bracket."
Tampa starter Justin Boza cruised until the fourth when Tusculum got to the right-hander for three runs on four hits to make it 3-1.
But Tampa scored five in the sixth. Second baseman Jamie McKean and shortstop Brad Chamberlain both had run-scoring doubles in the inning.
Aaron Cook (8-1) got the win for Tampa, pitching 22/3 innings in relief for Boza.
In the morning game, Tampa scored twice in the fifth and got a complete game from right-hander Sergio Perez.
Tampa must beat host Florida Southern twice today to advance. The first game is 1 p.m. at Henley Field.
OTHER GAMES: Matt LaPorta hit a grand slam to cap a five-run fifth as visiting Florida (36-18, 18-10 SEC) defeated Vanderbilt 5-4. ... The first five USF batters walked and the host Bulls (31-29, 14-14 Conference USA) went on to score four in the first en route to a 6-2 win over Cincinnati. ... FSU's game at N.C. State was rained out. The teams will try again at noon today.
Basketball
TAMPA - USF's recruiting class became the largest in coach Robert McCullum's career with a seventh signee in 6-foot-10, 242-pound center Frane Markusovic of Croatia. Markusovic spent this year at Kent School, a prep school in Connecticut, where he averaged 10 points and 12 rebounds. He missed most of the season with a stress fracture in his right ankle but has recovered.
Tennis
Junior Jennifer Magley won to clinch Florida's spot in the semifinals as the Gators defeated Southern Cal 4-2 in the NCAA women's championships in Athens, Ga. Magley, fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, defeated No. 9 Nicole Leimbach 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, rallying from 3-1 down in the third set. UF faces Texas today.
USF arrests
TAMPA - Former USF football player Curtis Chance and women's basketball point guard Chanae Early were arrested this week and face felony charges related to a string of campus incidents that totaled more than $11,000 in property stolen or obtained using stolen credit cards. Chance, dismissed from the football team May 2, was arrested Wednesday and faces felony charges of burglary and grand theft, plus a misdemeanor charge of fraudulent use of a credit card. Early was arrested Thursday and faces two felony counts of fraudulent use of a credit card.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Duke closed with 297 to win the NCAA title by five strokes over UCLA in Sunriver, Ore. Florida finished 10th with a four-round total of 1,195, 25 shots behind the Blue Devils, who also had the individual champion, Anna Grzebien. She was at 2-over 286. Freshman Tiffany Chudy (72-296) was 16th for the Gators.
MEN'S GOLF: UF shot a tournament-best 14-under 270 in the second round of the NCAA East Region in Nashville to move into second place at 557. The Gators trailed leader Wake Forest by three strokes heading into today's final round.
