Condominium elevator now working

By WAVENEY ANN MOORE
Published May 22, 2005

Diane Besett says she can now enjoy the $189,000 condominium she moved into in mid April. After waiting a month, the elevator to her third-floor apartment is now working.

In a recent Neighborhood Times story, Besett, who is disabled and uses a cane, complained about the out-of-service elevator. She said it had not worked since the day she moved into the Audubon Condominium at Feather Sound. It worked in March, she said, when she and her real estate agent went to buy the unit.

Ceebraid-Signal Corp., which recently converted the 14-building apartment complex to condominiums, disagreed. A spokeswoman said Besett was mistaken and that the elevator was still under construction when she bought her one-bedroom condominium.

Besett filed a housing discrimination complaint with the Pinellas County Office of Human Rights. She also complained to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and hired a lawyer.

She said the elevator began working last Monday.

"I'm elated," she said.

Still, Besett's lawyer said everything has not been resolved.

"The damage has already been done. She went through a month of horrendous difficulties," said Bonita M. Riggens.

"Her health was injured. We are just going to let the investigators deal with the investigation and go from there."
