Redington Beach rethinks chairs

By SHEILA MULLANE ESTRADA
Published May 22, 2005

REDINGTON BEACH - Apparently reacting to sharp criticism from residents, the commission backed away Tuesday from completing the purchase of 15 leather executive chairs, estimated to cost nearly $12,000.

When the commission could not decide whether it still wanted to purchase the chairs, it rejected a budget transfer that would have funded the purchase, as well as money for other town projects, including installing a shower at Beach Park.

Last month, the commission approved spending as much as $12,000 for 15 leather chairs for the commission dais and a commission conference table. Tuesday's stalled action would have made the funds available.

"The unfortunate part is we already voted to purchase the chairs. This will kill it," Mayor Bob Fountaine said.

Residents had criticized the commission for spending nearly $1,000 each for the chairs, which were to replace damaged and deteriorating chairs purchased in 1994.

A recent study shows that switching to a combination leather and vinyl chair from other vendors could save as much as nearly $3,000.

The budget transfer - and possibly the controversial chair purchase - is scheduled to come up again at the commission's June meeting.
