Treasure Island plans music, fireworks Friday, Saturday

TREASURE ISLAND - The final event for the city's 50th Anniversary Celebration will be Sun, Sand & Symphony, from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the county beach at Gulf Boulevard and 104th Avenue.
The Florida Orchestra will play two nights of pops, classical and show tunes, with special performances by Jon Secada and Joey Daniels on Saturday. The event is free to the public.
Secada is a two-time Grammy award winner whose self-titled debut album sold 6-million copies worldwide. His Spanish-language album, Otro Dia Mas Sin Verte, became the No. 1 Latin album in 1992. Secada has sold more than 20-million albums in his career.
Country artist Daniels was named "Who to Watch in 2005" by the Country Music Association's Close Up magazine. Her debut album, Take Me Off the Market, will hit stores this fall. The preshow warmup begins at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Fireworks will cap the festivities both nights. The Coast Guard will conduct a flyover Saturday evening, and the Anheuser Busch Sky Diving Team will perform at 7 both evenings.
Each night, Treasure Island artist Ruth Philipon will sign limited editions of her tropical Treasure Island 50th Anniversary commemorative poster, which is also on sale for $40 at the Recreation Department, 120 108th Ave.
Reserved seats are available both nights for $175 per table Friday and $250 per table Saturday. Tables seat six and include a gourmet basket. To reserve a table or get additional information, call the Treasure Island Recreation Department at 547-4575, ext. 237.
The city urges guests to use the PSTA Beach Trolley to Mile Markers 6 and 7. The city will provide bus transportation from Isle of Capri's Rosselli Park (Capri Circle S and Second Street E), Paradise Island/Treasure Bay (10315 Paradise Blvd.), Sunset Beach/Black Skimmer beach parking lot (8000 Gulf Blvd.), Tern Lot (Gulf Boulevard at 77th to 79th avenues), and Ring-Billed Gull Lot (Gulf and 81st Avenue).
Parking meter fees will be suspended from 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Parking is also available at the Treasure Island Community Center and Park, Gulf Boulevard at 106th Avenue.

Gulfport
The Pink Flamingo Home Tour of boomtime Mediterranean and other period homes will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4. The tour, which begins at Stetson University, costs $10. Tickets may be purchased the day of the event.

The Gulfport Recreation Center is accepting resident registration applications for summer camp, Tuesday to July 29. Register between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Recreation Center, at 5730 Shore Blvd. S.

Indian Rocks Beach
The Beach Art Center's Creative Arts Camp, which started this week, will continue until July 15.
The program for children ages 7-12 will be conducted in one-week segments. A child may be enrolled for as little as one week or as many as six. Young artists will dabble in drawing, painting, sculpture, charcoal, 3-D art, papier-mache and other creative projects.
Cassandra Gordon-Harris, the Pinellas Arts Council artist in residence at Sexton Elementary School, is the instructor. The fee is $80 per week, plus a $10 materials fee. Snacks are provided.
Adult art classes are also offered through July. The classes are $60 for members and $75 for nonmembers for four weeks, except as noted:
Monday, 9 a.m. to noon, oil painting open studio. No instruction; $3 per session; no enrollment necessary.
Tuesday, 1 to 4 p.m, independent studies in all media with Taylor Ikin.
Wednesday, 9 a.m. to noon, clay with Jane Erickson. Beginners through advanced.
Wednesday, 9 a.m. to noon, watercolor with Julie Messerschmidt. Beginners through advanced.
Thursday, 1 to 4 p.m., Sumi-e or the Suiboku method of using black ink, water and color, with Hiroko Borish.
Thursday, 6-9 p.m., Clay with Vivian Marra. Beginners through advanced; wheel throwing and hand-building.

Madeira Beach
The Gulf Beaches Public Library will sponsor a discussion about female writers who made a difference in classic literature at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Julie McConnell, former Great Books Leader of St. Petersburg College, will conduct the discussion on Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte. Refreshments will be furnished by the Friends of the Library.
The book discussion group meets on the fourth Thursday evening of each month. The library is at 200 Municipal Drive. For more information, call Julie at 391-5293.

Treasure Island
The Treasure Island Open Air Market is moving to the community park on 106th Avenue N at the Community Center, one block east of Gulf Boulevard. The market will be open the first and third Saturdays of June, July and August from 8 a.m. until noon.
It offers fresh vegetables, baked goods, prepared foods, arts, crafts and collectibles. The full season will begin the second Saturday of September with regular hours, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
