Annual rankings by Stephen P. Leatherman, a top coastal expert and a professor at Florida International University in Miami, list Fort De Soto in St. Petersburg as the nation's best. Nicknamed "Dr. Beach," Leatherman included a second beach in Pinellas County in the top 10.
