Lake Seminole upgrades to be described tonight

SEMINOLE - Plans for restoring Lake Seminole will be discussed during a public meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N.

Officials from Pinellas County's environmental management program will answer questions about why the lake needs restoration and how it will be accomplished.

Lake Seminole, 684 acres, is the second largest lake in the county. The lake's management plan includes improving water quality and flood control. Next winter, the county plans to lower the lake level for stormwater treatment improvements and habitat restoration.

Heritage Village will host an orientation for junior docents from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Junior docents, ages 12 to 17, will learn about Pinellas County and Florida history while researching and presenting guided tours, participating in special events and festivals, working on summer camps for children, developing living history activities and being role models for children and young adults. Junior docent teams will research, develop and initiate a living history "Piece of the Past," highlighting tours of the McMullen Log Cabin, the Sulphur Springs Depot, the Lowe Barn and the Harris School House. The inaugural "Tri If You Dare" Kids Triathlon will be held June 26, hosted by the city Recreation Division. The run/bike/swim-in-pool event is open to kids 7 to 14 years old. The Panama Canal Museum exhibit, "Molas! The American Influence," will continue through June 16. Traditional molas appliqued on Cuna Indian women's blouses depict a "cosmos" of colorful birds, monkeys, flowers and mythical beings. With the opening of the Panama Canal, employees commissioned the Cuna women to create molas depicting boats passing through the canal, golf, airplanes and other designs that reflect an American theme.

The Panama Canal Museum is at 7985 113th St., Suite 100. It's open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors, $1 for children and free for those under 6. Call 394-9338.
