Girls 12 to 16 are one slice of the movie audience who are seldom served yet usually respond well at the box office. The next sleeper hit, thanks to them, may be The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (PG). It could turn out to be The Princess Diaries of summer 2005.
Based on Ann Brashares' popular novel, the movie revolves around four best friends spending the destiny-shaping summer of their lives apart.
From left, Carmen (America Ferrera, Real Women Have Curves) is spending the summer with her father, who has a new live-in lover. Bridget (Blake Lively) is attending soccer camp in Mexico where her coach is muy caliente. Lena (Alexis Bledel, The Gilmore Girls) is vacationing in Greece, and also falling in love. Tibby (Amber Tamblyn, TV's Joan of Arcadia) is a budding documentary filmmaker working a summer job and chronicling her dull hometown.
The only thing linking these four girls is one worn pair of blue jeans that coincidentally fits each of them perfectly. They keep in touch by swapping the pants, following a code of etiquette that includes never washing them. Whoever draws the short straw must get them last.
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants opens Wednesday. A review will be published that day on Page 2B.
