Drawing the line

A Times Editorial
Published May 29, 2005

A piece of art depicting President Bush being sodomized with images of an oil barrel and a Muslim man in the background was moved from its prominent place in the Broward Art Guild after another artist complained it was tasteless and offensive. Artist Alfred Phillips said it was meant to be a political statement about the United States being at the mercy of oil companies.

Michael Friedman, the artist who complained about the painting, told the Sun-Sentinel: "Something snapped inside. Sodomy in a public forum is not, from my perspective, considered art. I think somebody has to draw the line somewhere."

Friedman entered his own painting in the exhibit, which is titled "Controversy." And where does he draw the line? His painting depicts Pope Benedict XVI, a German, with swastikas in the background.

Sounds like the exhibit is living up to its name.
