Bay area residents quirky when it comes to e-mail

Tampa Bay area residents may be hooked on e-mail, but they're not as attached to it as residents of some other areas.

According to an online survey by America Online, Tampa Bay residents didn't make the top 10 areas for e-mail addiction. Miami-Fort Lauderdale led the list, followed by San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York and Houston.

But people have their quirks when it comes to their e-mail: 46 percent here have checked it in the middle of the night (40 percent in the overall results); 20 percent in bed (23 percent overall); 7 percent in class (12 percent overall); and even 1 percent in church.

That's not all. Eight days is the longest anyone in the survey here reported going without checking their messages. Seventy percent have more than one e-mail account, with three accounts the average.

And 44 percent do personal e-mail at work (61 percent overall), though 28 percent feel guilty about it. That also may explain why 45 percent of users would like the ability to "unsend" messages and 43 percent would like to track where their messages have been forwarded.
