Taste helps tots

Taste of Pinellas, the Tampa Bay area's biggest food sampling event and one of its largest charitable fundraisers, kicks off today at the waterfront Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg. Musical entertainment includes K.C. and the Sunshine Band 8:30 p.m. today, .38 Special (8 p.m. Saturday) and Eddie Money (5:30 p.m. Sunday). Nibbles from more than 50 restaurants and vendors are $1 to $4. Benefits All Children's Hospital. Hours: 5 to 10 p.m. today; noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, with fireworks about 9:45 p.m.; and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. (727) 892-4193 or www.allkids.org

A couple of B movies

The world of skateboard pioneers depicted in the 2001 documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys is fictionalized in Lords of Dogtown, opening today. St. Petersburg Times film critic Steve Persall says it's not quite as good as the documentary, but he gave it a B. Also onscreen today: Cinderella Man, starring Russell Crowe as '30s boxer Jim Braddock. Persall gave it a B.

Happy trails

Saturday is National Trails Day, so get outside and enjoy a hike or a bike. Some opportunities for organized fun at Hillsborough River State Park, 15402 U.S. 301 N, Thonotosassa: Florida Trail Association hike, meeting at 8:30 a.m. at Parking Lot 4, or 90-minute nature walks at 8, 10 a.m. and noon, meeting in the picnic area. Also Saturday, a 5-mile Silver Lake Loop hike at Withlacoochee State Forest Citrus County tract or a bike ride on the Withlacoochee trail, part of Florida's Rails-to-Trails program. A peck of peppers

For those who like a lot of spice, the annual Pepper Extravaganza is hot this weekend. Sample tastes from more than 25 pepper product vendors with names like Chile Chile Bang Bang and Catch a Fire, find ways to cook with peppers, and browse plants and products. Amateur salsamakers can compete Saturday, and hot sauce makers Sunday. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Beckett Lake Nursery, 2251 Montclair Road (one block north of Sunset Point Road, off Belcher), Clearwater. (727) 796-7950.
