VOUCHER VERDICT
As the administration winnows its list of candidates to fill a Supreme Court vacancy when Chief Justice William Rehnquist steps down on Tuesday the court will hear arguments in a case that challenges the constitutionality of school vouchers distributed by Florida's Opportunity Scholarship program. The decision could affect voucher programs nationally.
GOOD SPORTS STUFF
On Friday, Sotheby's auction house in New York will be taking bids on an enormous collection of sports memorabilia. Among the items for sale is a batch of Red Sox goodies that includes the 1919 contract selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees, plus hundreds of other collectibles related to baseball, football, tennis, boxing and other sports. To browse the catalog or sign up to bid, go to search.sothebys.com.
PROFESSOR FLORIDA
University of South Florida professor Gary Mormino knows more about our state than just about anyone, and he has written all about it in Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida. Mormino will be signing his book at 5:30 p.m. Friday at a little slice of Florida history, Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg.
FOR X-PHILES ONLY
Sounds like the cream of summer rerun watching to us: The X-Files Mythology, Vol. 1: Abduction comes out Tuesday on DVD. Each set of the Mythology gathers episodes from one of the show's multiple plot arcs. These four discs contain 16 episodes from the show's first three seasons that develop the alien abduction/government conspiracy arc, as well as commentary and a documentary. No other television show has managed to be so creepy, sexy and hilarious - and confusing - at once as The X-Files, and these sets are designed to help connect the dots.
MAKE THE CAKE CHOCOLATE
Moviegoers' mouths are watering for Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, due on screens July 15. This is a delicious week for its stars: On Thursday, Johnny Depp, who plays chocolatier extraordinaire Willy Wonka, turns 42, and Freddie Highmore, who plays lucky Charlie Bucket, will be 13. On Saturday, Gene Wilder, who played the title role in 1971 in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, will be 72.
