Hillsborough grades decline

By TIMES STAFF
Published June 8, 2005

TAMPA -- The Hillsborough County School District saw its number of A and B schools dip this year after the state released its annual school grades Wednesday.

Forty percent of the county's 201 schools earned As, 24 percent earned Bs, 25 percent earned Cs, 9 percent earned Ds and 1 percent earned Fs. Last year, 71 percent of the county's schools earned As or Bs. This year there were only 64 percent of the schools earning such high ratings.

For the first time in three years, the school district had regular schools earning an F. They were Edison, Just and Potter elementary schools -- all high poverty campuses.

Schools are graded each year based on student results on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Schools that receive high grades or improve receive $100 per student in recognition money from the state.
