Daily fishing report
By DAVE MISTRETTA
Published June 9, 2005
Many species of fish were caught this week while tarpon fishing. Blacktip sharks stole the live threadfin herring tossed into the schools of tarpon. The sharks were about 4-feet long, so the initial strike resembled a silver king until they leaped out of the water. Expect to encounter these sharks for the rest of the summer as they thrive in warm water. Blacktips also make good table fare if cleaned and iced quickly.
Cobia also have been cruising with the tarpon, stealing their share of threadfin herring. We also hooked a kingfish while tossing herring into the tarpon schools. The huge mackerel took off with the bait, but we managed to loosen the drag and let the fish run out of steam.
If you are using crabs for bait while tarpon fishing, expect to find an occasional permit. These giant cousins of the pompano often cruise with silver kings.
