  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

The Latest Development

Legacy Park

By MICHAEL CANNING
Published June 10, 2005

LOCATION: Fifteen acres one-quarter mile south of Gandy Boulevard, between West Shore Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue.

DEVELOPER: High Point Development.

DESCRIPTION: Twenty-eight two- and three-story buildings with 133 townhouses. Units will range from 1,800 to 2,700 square feet and have three or four bedrooms and 21/2 or 31/2 bathrooms.

PRICE: $239,000 to $429,000.

ARCHITECT: Rojo Architecture in Tampa.

AMENITIES: Club room with wet bar and kitchen; park area with koi pond; hardwood floors; granite kitchen counter tops; one- and two-car garages; private driveway for each unit; and 10-foot ceiling heights in living areas. Thirty-two units will have detached two-story garages with an upstairs bonus room and bathroom, plus a private courtyard.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Legacy Park's principal architect, John Saldana, said the project will feature eight different classic architectural styles. The goal is to make it "feel like a neighborhood, not like an apartment complex," he said. "We looked back to turn-of-the-century architecture, looked at places like Savannah (Georgia) and Charleston (South Carolina). We extracted the architectural elements that give those places their character."

TIMELINE: Construction is scheduled to begin in September and last a year.

MOVE-IN DATE: Starting in September 2006.

FOR INFORMATION: Call the High Point Development sales office at 600-4600, or online at legacyparktampa.com.
