Film group hopes to lure big productions

Tampa goes Hollywood this week as members of the statewide trade association Film Florida gather for their annual meeting.

One of the hot topics is sure to be who will get a piece of the $10-million in state incentives the Governor's Office of Film and Entertainment is preparing to hand out. Today is the first day for applications, and those who apply by June 24 will have the early advantage. The state is looking for productions that will spend at least $850,000 in Florida and will start shooting soon. See www.filminflorida.com for info.

The Film Florida meetings are Wednesday through Friday at International Plaza - at the Renaissance Tampa Hotel International and various venues on Bay Street. Thursday's media mix reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bar Louie is open to the public.

The Tampa Bay area has become a hot spot for filming commercials and infomercials, said Krista Soroka, Hillsborough County film commissioner. Wal-Mart, Volvo and OxiClean have had recent area shoots, along with the weight-loss reality show Biggest Loser 2 and two British television shows.
