Ethics complaint filed against Tampa mayor

By Times Staff Writer
Published June 14, 2005

TAMPA - Retired Tampa firefighters have filed a complaint against Mayor Pam Iorio with the Florida Commission on Ethics.

The complaint claims Iorio violated city policies by allowing active duty firefighters to use station computers and wear uniforms while lobbying state legislators to pass a bill increasing pension benefits in March 2004.

Lawmakers unanimously passed the bill, which raised benefits retroactively for active - but not retired - employees.

The complaint also claims that Iorio violated state ethics statutes by supporting the union to gain support if she runs for re-election in 2007. Iorio said Monday she had no comment.

Aria Green, who was fire chief at the time, told his employees not to lobby lawmakers on city computers or wear their uniforms during their trip to Tallahassee - but Iorio over-rode Green's orders, the complaint states.
