TAMPA - A man who officials say set out with four others to rob partygoers leaving Ybor City has been charged in the death of his friend, who was shot by police.
Harvey Broadnax, 19, who was also shot by police in a hail of bullets early Friday, remained at Tampa General Hospital on Monday. A day earlier, he was charged with second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to police and jail records.
Principal suspended for a day in plagiarism case
SPRING HILL - Springstead High School principal Susan Duval was suspended by school district officials last Thursday while they investigated her for plagiarizing two commencement speeches.
After suspending Duval with pay last Thursday, Hernando school district officials returned her to work Friday. Barbara Kidder, the district's director of labor relations and professional standards, said Duval was returned to her job because district officials had finished investigating.
But superintendent Wendy Tellone and other district officials are still finalizing any penalty Duval might receive for plagiarizing her speeches at Springstead's commencement ceremonies for the past two years.
Duval could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
Air compressor strands mermaids on dry land
WEEKI WACHEE - The mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs are gasping for air - at least for now.
The theatrical creatures were beached late Saturday afternoon, when the park's air compressor broke down between mermaid shows. The 30-horsepower compressor, which was installed in 1990, supplies air to the mermaids' breathing tubes.
"The mermaids are still there," amusement park spokesman John Athanason said. "They're just out of water."
