MLB passes on Lowe the third time around

By STEVE LEE
Published June 14, 2005

Saint Leo pitcher Ronnie Lowe is a realist. Though he is a two-time selection in the Major League Baseball draft, the left-hander is not surprised he was bypassed last week.

"I hadn't talked to any scouts, so I wasn't expecting it," Lowe said. "I guess I'm just going to have to go back for my senior year and see what happens after that."

Lowe, who played for Ridgewood's state finalist team in 2002 and pitched for two seasons at Pasco-Hernando Community College, has yet to sign. The Diamondbacks chose Lowe in the 48th round in 2002 and the Angels took him in the 38th in 2003.

Lowe was not drafted following his second season at PHCC, so he accepted a scholarship to Saint Leo.

This season, the two-time Sunshine State Conference pitcher of the week went 4-5 with a 3.74 ERA and team-leading 57 strikeouts.

"I know I didn't have the greatest season," he said. "I had some good games, but I didn't put up the best numbers."

Lowe is honing his pitching skills in the Cal Ripken Senior League this summer. Also playing in the wooden bat league are Saint Leo teammates Rhett Teller, Rich Hittel (Ridgewood) and Jeff Germano.
