Daily fishing report
By MIKE WHITMAN
Published June 15, 2005
Tropical Storm Arlene was far enough away that it had little affect on offshore fishing. The water was not too stirred and we were able to fish Monday. Grouper have moved to 115 feet and deeper in search of cooler water. The fish relocate to breaks and Swiss cheese bottom this time of year. This is an excellent time to find new bottom by drifting for grouper. Big redfish also are popular catches during the summer while drifting on Swiss cheese bottom.
Mangrove snapper fishing continues to be good. Chum the fish to the surface using oysters and barnacles scraped off the bridge pilings with a spade and net. Drop this mixture into a 5-gallon bucket and grind it into small pieces with a baseball bat. Drop your anchor and spread the mixture into the water. The shell with bits of meat will sink to the bottom while the larger pieces will stay suspended in the water column. Snapper will move up and down the water column ready to eat.
