Tarpon woman gets probation in exploitation of elderly case

A certified nursing assistant charged with stealing $41,000 from an elderly East Lake couple who hired her as their caregiver has been placed on probation, according to court records.

Prosecutors charged Cindy J. Cabezas, 47, of Tarpon Springs with exploitation of the elderly after her arrest in April 2004. She had worked for the couple for eight years, cleaning, cooking, shopping and caring for them, according to Pinellas County sheriff's officials. Cabezas was charged with forging checks and using the money to pay off credit cards and go on a cruise. She pleaded guilty to grand theft on June 6, court records show. A judge withheld a formal finding of guilt, sentenced her to five years' probation and ordered her to pay restitution.
