TALLAHASSEE - Gov. Jeb Bush vetoed a bill Wednesday that would have allowed the University of South Florida St. Petersburg to request a new student fee to pay for a student center.
Bush said he vetoed the bill because no other state university is allowed to seek a similar fee and it could exceed the state rule limiting fee increases to 5 percent annually.
He also vetoed a bill that would have reduced penalties for schools taking longer to meet new class size requirements and signed a measure meant to prevent life insurance investing scams.
Under the insurance measure, life insurance investments will be regulated as a security, requiring the state to license brokers of the settlements and approve promises to investors.
Bush also vetoed an ethics bill aimed at reducing conflicts of interest for state employees.
