County educator finalist in Georgia

Donnie Evans was bypassed as a finalist for replacing superintendent Earl Lennard.

TAMPA - Donnie Evans, the Hillsborough County School District's chief academic officer, is one of four superintendent finalists for Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools in Georgia.

Evans, 55, is one of retiring superintendent Earl Lennard's top administrators and the district's highest-ranking black official. He oversees the district's choice student assignment program and its charter schools.

Evans said he decided to apply for the job after the Hillsborough County School Board in May bypassed him as one of five final candidates to replace Lennard. Board members chose two other inside candidates and eventually hired one of them, chief facilities officer MaryEllen Elia, who begins her new job July 1.

"I've always wanted to be a superintendent," said Evans, a North Carolina native who has been a Hillsborough administrator since 1993. "I think the time has probably come for me to seriously do this. I don't want to stop just because I wasn't successful here."

The other candidates for the Savannah superintendent job are all public school administrators. They include Michael P. Bull, Gainesville, Ga., assistant superintendent for instruction; Carl E. Harris, Durham, N.C., associate superintendent for instructional services; and Thomas B. Lockamy, Norfolk, Va., deputy superintendent and chief academic officer.

The Georgia school district has about 35,000 students compared with more than 180,000 in Hillsborough.

The Savannah School Board is expected to vote on a new superintendent July 2.

It is replacing former Savannah superintendent Col. John F. O'Sullivan Jr., who had a rocky relationship with board members. The board and O'Sullivan agreed in November to sever the superintendent's contract, which did not expire until June 30, 2006.
