Two Pinellas students are recipients of the Mildred Shavlan Achievement Award, sponsored by the Pinellas Braille Group. The award is presented annually to visually impaired students who have shown outstanding achievement during the school year.

Mary Stark, daughter of Nancy and Robert Stark of Largo, is a rising junior in the Center for Wellness and Medical Professions at Boca Ciega High School. Sandra Diez-Preza, daughter of Diana and Eduardo Linares of St. Petersburg, is a 2005 graduate of Pinellas Park High. She will attend the Pinellas Technical Education Center to pursue an interest in nursing.

Erik Johanson, a rising senior in the Center for Advanced Technologies at Lakewood High, has been selected by American Legion Post 125 to attend this year's Florida American Legion Boys State Youth Leadership Program in Tallahassee.

Johanson will join 500 boys statewide who will run for office, campaign for votes and participate in an inaugural parade for a mythical 51st state. They will earn three dual enrollment college credits from Tallahassee Community College, and two of them will be selected to represent the Florida American Legion at Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., in July.

Johanson, president of Lakewood High's debate club and debate team captain, was the American Legion District 16 oratorical contest winner earlier this year.

Michael Flegiel, a student at Lakewood High School, has been selected to attend Lead America's 2005 Congressional Student Leadership Conference in Boston. The college-accredited program is offered to academically talented and promising young leaders throughout the United States.

Flegiel will choose from several areas of study, including government and politics, engineering, science and robotics and global business and entrepreneurship. He will participate in briefings and discussions with national and international leaders and get hands-on experience in workshops to develop leadership, communication and conflict resolution skills.
