  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Getting there

By LORRIE LYKINS
Published June 22, 2005

The starting line: 99th Street N in Largo.

The finish line: The Southwest Complex pool on Vonn Road in Largo.

The ride: A silver 2004 Ford Mustang convertible with 24,360 miles on it (my first car).

Approximate gas mileage: 17 miles per gallon.

Gas station on your route with cheapest prices? I don't know about prices - I just always stop at the Shell station on 131st Street and Ulmerton Road because it's the only one on the way to work.

The route you take: West on 102nd Avenue to 131st Street, then north (131st Street becomes Vonn Road when it intersects with Walsingham Road). The complex is at Vonn and Wilcox roads.

Have you found a good shortcut? No need - the route is so short, it is a shortcut.

Distance/length of commute? Four miles - it takes 15 minutes to get to work.

What time do you normally get home after work? About 4:45 p.m.

Do you ever carpool? No.

How do you occupy your drive time? Listening to music - I like '80s music on 101.5 FM.

What CD is in your player right now? I have a six-CD player. I'm listening to Frou Frou, Nirvana, The Best of the Police, Journey, Linkin Park, the Songs For a New World soundtrack and a CD by a local band that belongs to my girlfriend, I don't know the name of the group.

What do you like about the commute? The freedom only a convertible can offer.

What do you dislike? Other cars on the road. And exhaust fumes.

Is there anything that you do on the road that seems to annoy other drivers? Blasting the '80's music, I'm sure.

What do other drivers do that drives you crazy? Seriously, for some reason, people keep merging near my car from other lanes without even looking. It drives me crazy.

Most memorable/odd/funny thing you've seen while driving? I was driving home from a party on St. Pete Beach with some friends one night. It was about 2 a.m. and we're heading up Gulf Boulevard when we see this crazy guy dressed in full Scottish regalia - kilt, bagpipes the whole thing - dodging in and out of traffic. It was pretty weird.
