Treasure Island's marketplace

The Treasure Island Open Air Market is open every Saturday during the summer from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Treasure Island Community Park at 106th Avenue N at the Community Center, a block east of Gulf Boulevard behind Walgreens. The market offers fresh vegetables, baked goods, prepared foods, arts, crafts and collectibles. For vendor information, call Steve or Pat at 345-9084.

Gulfport

The Gulfport Public Library is offering a Summer Reading Program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, as well as Teens Cool Summer Fun Programs. The programs feature Saturday puppet shows, poster designing, raffles and prizes. These and other programs include:

Wednesdays, 2:30 p.m. - today, Wonders of Nature; June 29, The Jingleman. Prizes will be awarded to top readers.

Fun with Crafts - Tuesday, 2:30 p.m.

Stories and Puppets - June 25, 2 p.m.

Gulfport Creative Writers - Wednesdays, 9:15 a.m. to noon.

Caregivers Support Group - Saturdays at 10 a.m. Sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association; open to all adults caring for someone with a chronic illness. For more information, call Georgia Terry at 549-8938.

The Gulfport Recreation Center Summer Program runs through July 29. Summer Camp is available for children who have completed kindergarten through the age of 14. Indian Rocks Beach

Six-week sessions of Youth Swim Instruction, offered by the North Beaches Branch YMCA, is at the Holiday Inn Harbourside, Indian Rocks Beach. Children are divided according to age group and ability. New this summer are snorkeling classes for children ages 6 to 12. A noncompetitive swim club for the same age group meets weekly through October. To register, call the YMCA at 595-5610.

The Beach Art Center's Creative Arts Camp will continue until July 15. The program for children ages 7-12 will be conducted in one-week segments. A child may be enrolled for as little as one week or as many as 6. Young artists will dabble in drawing, painting, sculpture, charcoal, 3-D art, paper mache and other creative projects designed to teach the basics of fine art and have lots of summer fun.

Cassandra Gordon-Harris, the Pinellas Arts Council Artist-in-Residence at Sexton Elementary School, is the instructor. The fee is $80 per week and a $10 materials fee. Snacks are provided.

Adult art classes and studios for oil paining, independent studies, clay, watercolor, and Sumi-ie/Suiboku also are offered through July. The classes are $60 for members and $75 for nonmembers each four weeks. For registration and information, call 596-4331.

The YMCA is offering a Summer Arts Program for seniors older than 55. Classes will meet Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Beach Art Center, 1515 Bay Palm Blvd. Sessions will be through July 1 and from July 7 to 29. Students will learn art fundamentals such as color mixing, composition and design on Thursday and visit art museums or art centers on Friday to study the works of others. Paint, art supplies and transportation are provided. Cost is $50 a session. For information, call the YMCA at 595-5610.

Madeira Beach

The 17th annual Old Salt Ladies Inshore Offshore Fishing Tournament will be Thursday and Saturday at Gator's on the Pass, 12781 Kingfish Drive. Proceeds will benefit the Celma Mastry Ovarian Cancer Foundation. The group meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the American Legion Post 273 at 600 American Legion Drive. Gulf Beaches Public Library will have a book discussion group on female writers who made a difference in the classic literature world on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Julie McConnell, former Great Books Leader of St. Petersburg College will conduct the discussion on Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. The North Beaches Branch YMCA will offer Kiddie Sports, a summer experience for children ages 3 and 4 at the Belleair Beach City Hall park Mondays through July 11, and again from July 18 to Aug. 8. The cost is $20 for each child for the four-week course, which will include group games and an introduction to a variety of sports. Treasure Island
