TAMPA - Tampa Bay radio host Mason Dixon, critically injured in a weekend car accident, was upgraded to fair condition Tuesday, according to a St. Joseph's Hospital spokesman.

Dixon, 55, whose real name is Jimmie Crawford, was critically injured Saturday afternoon on S Mobley Road just west of Gunn Highway when his car was hit by a sport utility vehicle. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Dixon's 1971 Dodge Challenger was ripped in half in the crash.

Dixon, a morning DJ and program director at WRBQ-FM 104.7, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where doctors removed his spleen and reinflated his left lung. He also suffered broken ribs.

The driver of the SUV, 19-year-old Nydia Davila, suffered no serious injuries. Deputies gave her a citation for careless driving.
