SAN DIEGO - Manager Bruce Bochy, who has the most wins in Padres history, agreed to terms of a two-year contract extension Wednesday night.
Bochy's contract had been set to expire at season's end.
Bochy reportedly agreed to a deal during spring training, but owner John Moores tabled it while hiring Sandy Alderson as chief executive officer. When Moores hired Alderson on April 19, the owner said Bochy's fate would largely be decided by Alderson.
Bochy is 821-852 in 11 seasons with San Diego. He led the Padres to NL West titles in 1996 and 1998 and to the World Series in '98, where they were swept by the Yankees. This season, he has San Diego in first place in the NL West.
Bochy has been with the organization for 23 consecutive seasons as a player, coach or manager.
The Padres also placed right-hander Adam Eaton and catcher Ramon Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list. Eaton went on the DL retroactive to June 16 with a strained flexor tendon in his right middle finger. Hernandez went on retroactive to Saturday with an injured left wrist. Right-hander Tim Redding was activated from the disabled list and outfielder Paul McAnulty was recalled from Double-A Mobile.
FINLEY TO DL: The Angels placed centerfielder Steve Finley on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder and activated outfielder Curtis Pride from the DL.
The five-time Gold Glove winner is hitting .225 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs in 65 games.
"This allows me to get this thing hopefully gone for good so I'm not battling it anymore," Finley said.
ALL-STAR COACHES: Detroit's Alan Trammell and Oakland's Ken Macha were named to Boston manager Terry Francona's American League staff for the July 12 game in Detroit. San Francisco's Felipe Alou and Milwaukee's Ned Yost were named the NL coaches by St. Louis manager Tony La Russa.
MARINERS: Second baseman Bret Boone was back in the lineup after being benched for four games to work with hitting coach Don Baylor on his mechanics. "This isn't a tryout for Bret," manager Mike Hargrove said. "Bret was our second baseman before, and he's still our regular second baseman." The three-time All-Star is hitting .227 with five home runs and 29 RBIs.
ORIOLES: Outfielder B.J. Surhoff went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle above his ribcage. Outfielder David Newhan was recalled from Triple-A Ottawa. Trainer Richie Bancells also said third baseman Melvin Mora, who strained his right hamstring Tuesday, is day to day.
TIGERS: First baseman Dmitri Young left the game against the Twins in the first with an injured right index finger. X-rays were negative, and Young is day to day. ... Detroit sent right-handed reliever Matt Ginter to Triple-A Toledo, and purchased the contract of right-hander Sean Douglass. Ginter was 0-0 with a 5.47 ERA in 10 appearances this season.
